It's intriguing how the majority of the advice-seeking emails I receive are centered around relationship dilemmas, despite the fact that my writing predominantly focuses on unrelated topics. It appears that individuals grappling with matters of the heart are naturally drawn to seek guidance from me.

The recurring themes in these inquiries often revolve around unbalanced affection, mistreatment without resolution, and the struggle to articulate the desire to end a relationship. To an outsider, these issues may seem mundane, entailing disputes over pets, finances, and children, or dealing with a difficult mother-in-law or a partner neglecting household chores. Rarely do they involve extravagant parties, unconventional attire, or damaged furniture... almost never.

What's truly captivating about these relationship quandaries is the belief held by individuals that their problems are entirely unique and unparalleled. The emails might as well begin with, "YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS MARK, THIS IS THE ONLY INSTANCE IN THE UNIVERSE." Yet, upon closer examination, these situations are remarkably similar, some even bordering on the comical.

The predicament lies in the fact that I am unfamiliar with the person emailing me. Furthermore, I have no knowledge of their partner, family, or pets. Consequently, it becomes challenging for me to provide a definitive or authoritative response. An individual may lament that their spouse is unreasonable because they don't floss after intimacy, but little do I know that the spouse has been imploring them for years to groom their private areas.

A peculiar example, I admit...

In an unending endeavor to stem the deluge of emails in my inbox (you must understand), and in an attempt to aid individuals in helping themselves, here are some of the most noteworthy books on relationships that I have encountered.

And if you've arrived here from an email response to your romantic predicament, just know this: I appreciate you, and while you may be exceptional and extraordinary, your predicament is anything but unique. Best of luck.

GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANTBY HARVILLE HENDRIXBooks on relationships - getting the love you want

What You'll Discover: Why all your relationships seem to be awry in the exact same manner. Why you repeatedly find yourself in relationships with individuals who resemble your parents. Why most of your arguments revolve around seemingly trivial matters that you simply cannot let go of.

Why It's Exceptional: I read Getting the Love You Want approximately a decade ago, and it left me astounded. We all possess a vague awareness of the Freudian concept that we end up in relationships resembling those with our parents and are destined to relive our childhood traumas in our adult relationships. However, simultaneously, that notion has always felt like superstitious nonsense. Yet, as you mature and enter into a serious relationship, you begin to notice that your partner leaves belongings strewn across the house just like your father did, and it exasperates you to no end because it reminds you of the disorder and unpredictability of your childhood. The point I'm attempting to convey is THAT IF YOU TRULY CARED FOR ME, YOU WOULD REMEMBER WHERE YOU LEFT YOUR KEYS, DAMN IT!

Harville Hendrix. Hendrix provides a rational, logical explanation for why our relationships agitate our most sensitive areas to such an extent. Essentially, our interactions with our parents shape our "emotional maps" of what love signifies, what acceptance feels like, what defines a good person, and so forth. These maps then influence who we are drawn to as adults. We experience intense chemistry with certain individuals because, unbeknownst to us, they mirror our definitions of love, acceptance, empathy, and more. Before you know it, you're involved with someone who exhibits the same behaviors as your mother.

While comprehending your parents' distorted definitions of love does not necessarily rectify anything, it does provide a semblance of guidance to navigate your own romantic life. In fact, Hendrix refers to these as our "emotional maps." We all possess them. And we all struggle to interpret them. Thus, he is here to assist us.
